Me and Mart Friday 3rd February ,16 days post transplant
Recognized today that I'm still slightly removed from my feelings but I'm thinking this is because I'm focusing on the physical healing as this takes so much energy. I have no doubt the emotional flood gates will open when my body feels the timings right. At Friday clinic Creatine still swinging about, informed my stitches could hurt for some period of time yet but otherwise all seems well .Clinic days take alot out of me but its a chance to meet up with new friends.
This is Laura who was my neighbour in hospital and two weeks post transplant, two days behind me.It feels a special experience when you are sharing such similar experience around pain, procedures, fears, upset.gratefulness and of course the funny moments. Laura's mun donated her kidney to her. They both are exceptional women.Laura and me stopping traffic as we waddle to the car complete with pee jugs!
Reflections about waiting to go down to theatre 18th January 2012
It was a long day. Mart went down to theatre at 9am and when I went down at 3pm I could hear the medics trying to rouse him as I was in the adjoining anaesthetic room. I had a brilliant porter who stayed with me and kept peeping through the window to the adjoining theatre room giving me a running commentary. Mart was protesting in a drugged sort of way about having a catheter in. This was the nearest I got to him for a couple of days.
He was four hours on the table and two hours in recovery, I was five hours on the table and three in recovery. Normally the recipients surgery time is approximately 3 hours as it should take less time to plumb the kidney in than to extract it. Taking out a live kidney is a delicate procedure as it needs to be undamaged. Keyhole surgery means they make two small incisions either side of his belly to insert a camera and the cutting and cauterizing instrument. They then inflate the area around the kidney to make a space around it to work in. Then a three inch incision is made in his tummy to extract the kidney. Its then inspected, washed and put on ice whilst they bring me down to theatre for Marts kidney to be transplanted into me.
The reason our surgery time was increased was Marts kidney had an extra artery, about 30% of the general population have this and normally they would take the kidney out turn it around and implant it on the recipients opposite side so that the plumbing corresponds. So Marts right kidney would have preferably be plumbed into my left loin. However its plumbed into my right side as his arteries were quite stumpy and my left side also had weaker vessel. So the right side it was!
The surgeons are amazing as they have to think and create on their feet all the time with transplant surgery as there are so many anatomical variations in people. Having the second artery means there are more connections to plumb which means extra care as this means there could be more turbulence at the joints which could mean a 5% more chance of clotting in the new kidney. I am remembering that this means a 95 % success rate ......its so easy because of anxiety to hear the negative 5% loudly. So we're very hopeful and also on my side is that Mr Cambell is renowned for his skill and meticulousness...think he takes slightly longer but that feels like a good gamble to me.
I was three hours in recovery and the recovery nurse was fantastic.I remember the great thirsty feeling and her dipping a gauze in water and me sucking on it like a baby bird. She wouldn't let me go up to the ward until my pain was stabilized. The staff in recovery feel like unsung heroines to me, they are there in the background, doing what they do and so crucial. She came up to the ward to see me and I got a chance to thank her.The recovery nurse is the first person you come into contact with after surgery and it feels like such an important relationship as you wake confused, vulnerable and full of anxiety. The world of anaesthesia is a mystical and necessary wonderland for me.
Back on the ward 1am Thursday morning .Its been a really long day for the kids having both their parents having major surgery in the same day! But wait they did! And so the recovery starts!
The Walshaws favourite past time, sleeping.
Proving to be a long wait
Still waiting for mum to go down!
Still waiting!
Getting attired for surgery love the paper knickers and the DVT stockings!
